| Dearest Friend… a light sculpture by Darya von Berner water colors – Boat Route corner of Zwanenburgwal/Amstel In the 17th century Baruch Spinoza’s radical ideas did much to open the doors of Enlightenment in Europe. After his death at the Hague in 1677, his works, which he had kept in his desk, were saved by his friends and, following his instructions, it was placed in a boat and delivered directly to his publisher in Amsterdam. By doing this, his friends were putting their lives at great risk, as Spinoza’s views on religion, politics, and philosophy were then considered extremely controversial and dangerous. It was an act of friendship which proved invaluable to mankind, for it preserved Spinoza’s writings, which laid the foundation for so many fundamental concepts which are now regarded as ‘modern’. En el siglo XVII, las ideas radicales de Baruch Spinoza contribuyeron enormemente a abrir las puertas de la Ilustración en Europa. Tras su muerte en La Haya en 1677, sus amigos salvaron sus obras, que guardaba en su escritorio, y, siguiendo sus instrucciones, las embarcaron y las entregaron directamente a su editor en Ámsterdam. Al hacerlo, sus amigos arriesgaron sus vidas, ya que las ideas de Spinoza sobre religión, política y filosofía se consideraban entonces extremadamente controvertidas y peligrosas. Fue un acto de amistad invaluable para la humanidad, pues preservó los escritos de Spinoza, que sentaron las bases de muchos conceptos fundamentales que hoy se consideran «modernos».

Share111 views Premiered Feb 21, 2025Baruch Spinoza died at his home in Voorburg on 21st February 1677, leaving precise instructions for his friend Lodewijk Meyer to deliver all his manuscripts to his publisher in Amsterdam. Meyer bravely undertook the journey despite the dangers he faced, carrying extremely controversial writings on religion, politics, and philosophy. He loaded everything into Spinoza’s desk and transported it by sea and through the semicircular canals of the old town until he reached the centre of the Dutch capital. At the 2015 Amsterdam Light Festival, I presented a 7 x 4 m luminous blow-up image of a letter from Spinoza to his amice suavissime Lodewijk Meyer. In 2025, Darya von Berner produced a short film entitled THE GIANT LETTER OF SPINOZA (13 min) about that journey, retracing the route Meyer took in 1677 while carrying Spinoza’s manuscripts. Baruch Spinoza falleció en su casa de Voorburg el 21 de febrero de 1677, dejando instrucciones precisas a su amigo Lodewijk Meyer para que entregara todos sus manuscritos a su editor en Ámsterdam. Meyer emprendió valientemente el viaje a pesar de los peligros que corría, llevando consigo escritos sumamente controvertidos sobre religión, política y filosofía. Cargó todo en el escritorio de Spinoza y lo transportó por mar y a través de los canales semicirculares del casco antiguo hasta llegar al centro de la capital holandesa.
En el Festival de la Luz de Ámsterdam de 2015, presenté una imagen luminosa ampliada de 7 x 4 m de una carta de Spinoza a su amigo y querido Lodewijk Meyer.
En 2025, Darya von Berner produjo un cortometraje titulado LA CARTA GIGANTE DE SPINOZA (13 min) sobre ese viaje, recreando la ruta que Meyer siguió en 1677 transportando los manuscritos de Spinoza.
